There was a lot of ink about the octopus Paul lately, and why not?
The octopus, also known as the "Oracle of Oberhausen, has successfully predicted the winner of six matches of the World Cup to date.
However, Paul has predicted the winner of the Africa world cup 2010 championship game on Sunday. Paul sticks to the favorite, picking Spain against Netherlands.
Managers of the 2 1/2 years old floppy octopus, a resident of the Aquarium Sea Life Oberhausen, tend it to make predictions for the games in which Germany plays. But because of recent world-renowned Paul and demand of his pick for the final, they made an exception.
Here's how Paul made his soothsayer predictions: The officials made a mold within each of two clear plastic boxes bearing the national flags of the teams in his tank. Paul then makes his choice by opening the lid with its tentacles and devouring a candy.
Millions across Europe, Taiwan and elsewhere attended a live TV broadcast this Friday when Paul has make his choice of Spain. The live broadcast had a breathtaking comment. Paul also predicted Germany over Uruguay in Saturday's match for third place.
Paul received business proposals, are thousands of fans on Facebook and even the attention of world leaders.
Many Germans, upset that he has correctly chosen Spain to Germany in the semifinals on Wednesday, want him fried. After its forecast loss of his country of origin has been conducted, the German television showed pictures of an octopus grilled.
This prompted the Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to worry about the safety of "El Pulpo Paul" as he is known in Spain.. "I am concerned about the octopus," said Zapatero. "I think to send a team to protect the octopus because it is obvious that it was very spectacular it should get the win right from Spain from there. "
In response to hundreds of angry e-mails of Germans, the aquarium actually took extra precautions, Porwoll said. "I even told our guards and people at the entrance to keep a close look possible from football fans after Paul for revenge, he said, adding that the hate mail has been offset by statements love and requests for predictions.
A animal protectio nagency says that Paul's tank is too small. But Porwoll said the creature was born in captivity and has never had to deal with natural enemies, so Paul dumped in the Atlantic would likely lead to death. It can live up to four years of captivity, Porwoll added.
In the meantime, it might have a future beyond the World Cup. A Greek journalist asked if the middle of mollusk could foresee the end of the financial crisis, and German television channels offered lucrative contracts, Porwoll said.
After the Arab news sites reported the selections from Paul, it was suggested he be sent to Iraq to choose between two bitter rival Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and his main challenger, Ayad Allawi, in contention for the head of the new government.
Will just have to see if the winner of the World Cup Match final from SUnday will be Spain or the Netherlands.
